YALDA NIGHT

Yalda Night Celebration

Yalda Night, also known as Shabe Yalda, is a cherished Persian tradition that marks the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. This ancient celebration is filled with hope, joy, and togetherness, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and the promise of a brighter future.

On Yalda Night, families and friends gather to make this otherwise cold winter night warm and delightful. They stay up late, sharing stories and reading poems, particularly the works of the famous Persian poet Hafez. These poems are believed to bring good fortune and guidance for the future. The night is also marked by the eating of specific fruits, each holding symbolic meanings. Watermelon is believed to protect observers from illness during the winter season. Pomegranates, abundant with seeds, symbolize prosperity and fertility, and blessings for a new life. The vibrant red color of these fruits symbolizes the dawn, bringing brightness and joy into the long night.

iHelp International, in partnership with the Afghan Association of Waterloo Region, hosts an annual event to celebrate Yalda Night. Our celebration brings the community together to enjoy a variety of traditional activities and entertainment. Highlights of the event in the past include the traditional Afghan egg fights (egg tapping), live music, traditional Afghan food, fashion shows, poetry readings, face painting, and a variety of additional games and entertainment. We gather with loved ones to create a joyful atmosphere that warms the cold winter night, continuing well past midnight into the morning. Join us on this special night to experience the tradition of Yalda and embrace the warmth of community spirit.

Shab-e Yalda Mubarak!
